Lion Dance classes

Learn traditional Chinese Lion Dance. This class is designed for all skill levels and anyone is welcome! Each session begins with a dynamic martial arts-based warm-up to get your body moving and energised. As we move onto practical movement practice, you’ll learn the steps and techniques that bring the lion’s character to life.

Our class also incorporates rhythm and drumming practice, allowing you to connect with the heartbeat of this beautiful tradition. Throughout the class, we weave in cultural insights, enriching your understanding of the history and significance behind the Lion dance.

Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, learn a new skill, or immerse yourself in a cultural experience, our Lion Dance class is the perfect place to start. Eventually, there will also be the opportunity to perform as a team at local events, such as Chinese New Year celebrations, birthdays, weddings and shop opening ceremonies.

what is it?

Chinese Lion Dance is a cultural tradition performed at celebrations, events and ceremonies. It is believed to bring good luck, ensure prosperity and ward off evil spirits. 

It has it’s roots in Chinese Martial arts and has been practised for centuries. Join us find out more.

  • Classes are held weekly at Weston All Saints Centre in Bath
  • Time and day TBC
  • £8 per adult and £5 for Under 18s – 1st class is Free for everyone!

About

Classes are hosted by Danny Ma. Danny trained in Pak Mei Kung Fu in the 80s in Hong Kong and the UK, where he preformed many Lion Dance ceremonies with the Chinese Association in Bristol and Bath. Now that he is retired, he would now like to share the culture and traditions of authentic Foshan Lion dance with others.
